Biographical Text

Brother Joseph Schwaab was born on November 30, 1856 in Rochester, New York to parents Fred Schwaab and Anna Reiland. At the time of Schwaab's entrance into the Society of Mary, he resided at 77 Glendale Park. He entered the Postulate at Nazareth on Jully 22, 1868 and proceeded into the Novitiate at Nazareth April 23, 1871. He left the Novitiate one year later, and gave temporary vows and Baltimore and Nazareth on March 8, 1873 and July 27, 1875, respectively. His perpetual vows were given at Nazareth, Dayton, Ohio, on August 6, 1879.

As a religious, Brother Schaab served at a variety of locations, including Nazareth, at the San Fernando School in San Antonio, as well as Saint Louis College and Saint Mary's college in San Antonio. He served as the director of the San Fernando school for many years, and was an avid botanist. He passed away on June 6, 1938 and is buried at what is currently Saint Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas.
